Umair Haque is a prolific, original writer and the reason I subscribed to Medium. Having read probably hundreds of his articles, I honestly think this might be the best thing he’s ever written.
Why?
A few reasons. First and foremost, this idea seems both like a brand new thought and yet long overdo, like I’ve been thinking it my whole life and asking “when is it going to happen?” Second, because it asks those of us in the rich “First World” to open our hearts to our brothers and sisters in the poorer parts of the world. For all the pontificating by the chattering classes about how to solve our problems, when I am really clear on things it seems so obvious: what we are in need of requires heart solutions more than head solutions. In short, we need to care again. Need to have empathy.
That is the antidote to the rise of right-wing demagogues, the antidote against the divisive, hateful messages they poison our societies with. And that is the reason I’ve bristled at some of the reaction by the so-called Resistance, because so much of it is taping into the very hatred they want to resist.
Yes, we are facing a global problem here so it’s time we find a way to expand our consciousness and our heart to include the whole planet.
