For the most part, I really enjoyed this piece and the history lessons. Yes, bring that guy back without his foot and add a plaque explaining the context of it being missing as you did here.
I said “for the most part,” more on what I sense may be a philosophical difference in my worldview than yours, which is I believe we humans are amazing in spite of our flaws. In that sense, I value reverence; so long as irreverance is also given a seat at the banquet table.
I suppose I do worry that there is a preponderance of “humans suck” perspectives, especially in academia, and while I do understand it (and have my days where I feel it), I do think when I am more in my natural flow state, I see us as being awesome beings, just as I see all Life in that way.
Anyway, keep writing! I love a good variety of perspectives and learning about history is endlessly fascinating!
