Second, I agree that the financial motivation isn't THE reason, or the ONLY reason---I think there's an ideology that seems reasonably prevalent among doctors in Western countries that puts too much value on scientific/technical solutions like pharmaceutical drugs. Having said that, there IS a lot of money in anti-depressants and when you consider the other things the author mentioned, travel perks and gifts and such, there's plenty of financial incentive for doctors to be focused on pharmaceuticals as the solution. Meanwhile, there's basically no financial incentive for proscribing more exercise, more sunlight, more meditation, etc.
