As a Gen Xer who studied journalism and political science in the 1990s and became disillusioned with mainstream media outlets like the New York Times back then, I cannot express with words how much I appreciate this excellent, well-linked article.
I’ve sometimes become incredibly frustrated at the willful ignorance of some of my intelligent, caring fellow Gen X friends regarding just how poor these institutions of media have become in our lifetime.
It’s as though they just want to live in denial of all the evidence this article references, evidence we’ve all lived through.
Meanwhile they will chastise me for getting most of my news through independent media sources like blogs like this, podcasts or YouTube channels not to mention excellent books such as Matt Taibbi’s brilliant 2019 analysis of why the media is in such a state, Hate, Inc..
I’m going to save and share this article many times. I wish I’d written it! (I live in Japan, though, and am not nor never have been an NYT subscriber and with them being one of the few newspapers which restricts articles to a measly four free reads per month, I don’t have nearly as many great links as this piece.).
Anyway, if you are a Gen Xer or above and you still cannot recognize we are in a new media era where once-renowned institutions are no longer leaders in journalistic integrity and where the people with integrity are mostly independent journalists, well, please open your eyes and simply pay attention to how much these dinosaurs get wrong.
